What is Dementia & Alzheimer’s?
Dementia encompasses a wide range of symptoms characterized by the decline in memory, language, problem-solving capabilities, and other cognitive functions to a degree that interferes with everyday activities. It is not a singular illness but a group of symptoms that can result from multiple underlying conditions, such as Alzheimer's disease. The disorders classified under the term "dementia" arise from irregular changes occurring in the brain. Dementia is not a single illness, but a group of symptoms caused by damage to the brain.
The signs of dementia develop progressively, meaning that cognitive decline starts slowly and steadily deteriorates over time, eventually resulting in dementia.
The signs of dementia can vary widely and may include difficulties with:
- Memory loss, such as remembering past events much more easily than recent ones
- Keeping track of personal items, such as a purse or wallet
- Paying bills
- Planning and preparing meals
- Remembering appointments
- Traveling outside of the neighbourhood
- Problems thinking or reasoning, or finding it hard to follow conversations or TV programmes
- Feeling anxious, depressed or angry about memory loss, or feeling confused, even when in a familiar environment
If you’re worried about your memory, it’s well worth talking to a clinician. They may be able to reassure you that you don’t have dementia. However, if you do have dementia, an early diagnosis may help you get the right treatment and support in place in good time. Finding out sooner rather than later can also give friends and family valuable time to adjust and prepare for the future.
To speak with one of our clinicians regarding dementia concerns please call our reception on 01827 713664 to arrange a routine appointment where you will be assessed, we will offer you advice, any queries you have will be answered and a correct management plan will be ensured.
